Polar Plungers

The Thomasville YMCA is hosting the inaugural Polar Plunge Fundraiser this Saturday to benefit swim lessons for local children.

The event will be held at the Butler-Mason YMCA swimming pool starting at 9 a.m. Volunteers from the community will go down the water slide into the icy cold water, all for a good cause.

More than 30 community volunteers have agreed to take the plunge so far.

“We love that our community members are so willing to take the plunge to help raise money for swim lessons,” said Katie Ketchum, marketing and financial development director. “So far the event has raised over $3,000 and all those proceeds will go directly toward providing swim lessons to kids right here in Thomasville/Thomas County.”

Said CEO Tom Everett, “We have a great group of community leaders, YMCA staff, and plungers willing to take the plunge all in the name of raising funds for local children. Drowning is one of the top five causes of death for children — and a majority of these children are younger than 5. With a need so great, we felt it was vital to create more opportunities for our community to be involved.”

“Drowning is not like you see in the movies — it’s usually quick and silent,” said Jennifer Clements, aquatics director at the Butler Mason YMCA. “As an aquatics professional, my goal for this event is to raise awareness that all children should be taught life-saving skills by learning how to swim.”

Each plunger will receive an event towel as a memento for braving the cold conditions. Several community sponsors have pledged their support for the inaugural event, including Barberitos Southwestern Grille and Cantina, CNS Next, Allgood Screen Printing and Embroidery, Seagate Printing and Creative Services, Teramore Development, Ponders Office Products & Printing,  & Dunkin Donuts.
